Friends — I’d like you to meet Selvin.
Selvin is a queer immigrant who came to the United States at 12 years old as an unaccompanied minor. Growing up, Selvin felt the weight of his queer identity, never being allowed to fully express himself. Leaving his family behind was a huge and difficult decision, but it was a necessary one to stay safe and feel comfortable as a queer youth.
But spending time in a shelter for people without a home, he learned that the family you choose can be enough to help you through anything. When his biological family wasn’t there, Selvin’s new family was there for him — friends he made along the way, his adopted father, and his immigration lawyer.
Even now, when he sees police cars, Selvin fears they might be coming to take him away, and that he might never again see his friends or the people he loves.
For 11 years, Selvin has been living in the shadows full of fear and uncertainty, not knowing if tomorrow is secure. But a pathway to citizenship can change that and finally allow him to breathe.
A pathway to citizenship would allow Selvin to be comfortable and no longer fear what tomorrow might bring. Selvin needs Congress to protect him and all immigrants from deportation.
We are fighting to do exactly that at United We Dream — secure a pathway to citizenship for all undocumented people. But we are also working to amplify the stories and lived experiences of undocumented youth like Selvin. And the only way we are able to find and share these stories is through the support of this grassroots team fueling our work.
Together, we can secure a future for Selvin and others that is free of constant fear and uncertainty. Click below to watch Selvin’s story and make a contribution of any amount meaningful to you so we can continue to lift up the stories of undocumented youth and fight for a better future.
