This past year has generated a great re-think about how education is provided in the U.S. Parent frustration with the public school system is at an all-time high. As you know, most public schools this school year remained shuttered or have been on greatly reduced schedules while many private schools—demonstrating the flexibility to meet safety concerns and without the need to respond to teachers’ union demands—remained largely open. This state of affairs has prompted people across the country to reconsider how best to give kids a good education. Encouragingly, in 2021, greater numbers of families are turning to nontraditional alternatives and interest in educational choice programs is surging.
One of IJ’s latest videos <[link removed]> showcases three private schools that began to innovate well before the pandemic and point the way forward now. They also exemplify how educational choice can give kids options that go beyond traditional private religious and prep schools.

This legislative session has been among the most productive ever for IJ’s educational choice team, with new and expansive programs already passed in West Virginia, Kentucky, and South Dakota, and more still under consideration in some of the 25 other states where we advised on legislation. Just this week, an IJ-supported tax-credit scholarship program for low-income kids passed in Arkansas.
Meanwhile, by the end of June, the U.S. Supreme Court will consider whether to take up IJ’s case <[link removed]> to ensure that Maine’s educational choice program allows parents the widest array of options: religious and non-religious alike. Joining us are 11 different groups who submitted friend-of-the-court briefs—including Build UP and Kuumba Prep, two of the schools featured in our video.
With your donation of $25, $50, or more <[link removed]>, you can help IJ stand for innovation and opportunity in education, and in all the other ways we fight to make it possible for ever more people to achieve their American Dream.
