The United States has a waste problem.

We produce approximately 12 percent of the world's total municipal solid waste, despite being home to only 4 percent of the global population.1

This is an unsustainable problem, but we're working toward a solution. It's time for a zero-waste economy, where we reduce what we use, reuse and repair what we can, and recycle the rest. That's why generous donors will match donations until midnight tonight, dollar for dollar, up to $10,000 nationwide.

Actualizing a zero-waste economy is critical to protecting the planet and public health from waste pollution and conserving natural resources and landscapes for future generations. And we know it's feasible. U.S. PIRG has a track record of combining professional research, advocacy and grassroots organizing to win real results.

Together, we can achieve a zero-waste future. Here's our plan:

• Reduce our reliance on single-use plastics. Each year, 8 million metric tons of plastic waste are dumped into our world's waters.2 We're working to curb this waste by reducing plastic use and production. U.S. PIRG is building support for producer responsibility legislation in our country and the federal Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act, which would ban many of the worst single-use plastics.

• Secure the Right to Repair. Americans discard 416,000 cell phones per day, and only 15 to 20 percent of electronic waste is recycled.3 The goal of our Right to Repair campaign is to give every consumer and small business access to the parts, tools and service information they need to repair products so we can keep our stuff off the trash heap.

• Improve our recycling systems. Our national network helped win some of the country's first bottle recycling laws in the 1970s and 1980s. Now, we're working to expand curbside recycling and to make manufacturers take responsibility for the waste their products will become.
