We're living in the midst of a climate disaster, team.
It's easy to think that the effects of climate change mean melting ice caps and warmer summers, but the reality is, climate change is dangerous to Ohioans. Here's how we're seeing the effects in Ohio:
- More intense droughts during the summer months that hurt our agricultural industry and damage our farms;
- Hotter temperatures that increase the risk of serious health effects like heat stroke for Ohioans;
- And heavier rainfalls and increases in flooding in the spring that can bring serious damage to our homes and businesses and increase the presence of waterborne illnesses.
The effects of climate change are already here and we're seeing them across the state. But it's not just in Ohio. The fact of the matter is: climate change isn't just an environmental issue, it's a racial justice issue too.
Access to the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the parks we enjoy are often determined by the color of our skin. We're seeing the effects in places like Flint, Michigan, where residents still don't have clean water; California, where some of the dirtiest air in America directly affects communities of color and low-income areas; and in Washington State, where increased flooding is harming tribal lands.
If we don't act soon to prevent the effects of climate change, the damages to our environment and our communities will be irreversible.
There is no Planet B. So today, on Earth Day, we all need to do our part to commit to fighting to protect our environment for future generations. From demanding action from our current legislators to pass clean energy bills to electing pro-environment Democrats at every government level in 2022 -- we must ensure climate change is front and center.
If you're with us, add your name to commit to taking action to protect our planet for future generations today.
Thank you,
Team ODP
