Telling your story is a great way to make a difference — and because it’s your story, there’s no one better to tell it! Too often, disabled people are told that our personal stories are “inspiring,” or encouraged to share our stories as a way to make others feel better about themselves. The truth is, our stories are powerful political tools, and we can use them to make real change.
Our new toolkit, “Sharing Your Story For a Political Purpose,” helps you brainstorm the most important parts of what you want to say, and make a plan to use your story to create policy change! The toolkit is available in Easy Read and Plain Language formats, and includes templates and examples that show how our voices can make a difference. It explains how to share your story in different places, like:
- Town halls
- Legislative hearings
- Public comments on regulations
- Op-eds and letters to the editor
- Petitions
We hope you’ll use these tools in your advocacy, and share our toolkit with people who might find it helpful! As people with disabilities, we are the experts on what our communities need — so let’s use our experiences to make a difference. Nothing about us, without us!
