Moments ago, I vetoed hateful and discriminatory legislation attempting to ban transgender athletes from participating in girls' and women's sports in Kansas.

Legislation like this sends a devastating message that Kansas is not welcoming to all children and their families, including those who are transgender -- who are already at a higher risk of bullying, discrimination, and suicide.

We should be focused on how to include all students in extracurricular activities rather than how to exclude those who may be different than us. Kansas is an inclusive state and our laws should reflect our values. This law does not.

I want to make this very clear: hate and discrimination have no place in Kansas.

This bill would also undoubtedly harm our ability to attract and retain businesses. It would send a signal to prospective companies that Kansas is more focused on unnecessary and divisive legislation than strategic, pro-growth lawmaking.

So today, I am sending a message to all of those who try to pass legislation that does not make Kansas a welcoming home for all. As long as I'm in the governor's office, my priority is ensuring every single Kansan feels safe and accepted -- and I will continue to veto any harmful or discriminatory legislation that is put in front of me.

Thanks,

Laura
