Hello there, it’s Cory Booker. I represent New Jersey in the U.S. Senate, and I’m excited to talk to you today about a bill that I’m working on with my good friend and colleague Martin Heinrich that would quite literally change the landscape across America. Our bill, the 21st Century Conservation Corps Act, would put millions of people to work with good-paying union jobs, rebuild our national infrastructure, and mobilize our country to meet the challenges of the climate crisis. We’re talking about reducing emissions by one-third on over 100 million acres of farmland by 2025. Planting billions of trees to revive deforested landscapes and expand urban tree cover. Restoring over two million acres of coastal wetlands and investing in renewable energy for farmers and rural small businesses. This is direct action to rehabilitate our natural environment, and here’s the best part of our legislation: we already know it works. When President Roosevelt took office in 1933, the United States was in the midst of the Great Depression. Our nation was also facing severe environmental challenges, so Roosevelt acted boldly by establishing the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and employing over 3 million young people in conservation projects.
The climate crisis presents a serious challenge to our way of life. From rising sea levels in New Jersey to droughts in New Mexico, we are already suffering from a rapidly warming climate. These problems aren’t insurmountable. We can plant billions of trees to sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. We can ensure that every American has access to clean drinking water, regardless of whether they live in the Navajo Nation or Newark, New Jersey. We can build bonds of community with one another and overcome the grave threat that the climate crisis presents to our way of life.
I’m so proud to help Martin lead on this critical issue, and I know that with your support, we can leave future generations an environment better than we found it. Thanks for standing with us. — Cory |
