Friend,
Did you know that the “Asthma Capital of the U.S.” is right here in Springfield, Massachusetts? Nearly one in five children in Springfield have asthma and the rate of asthma-related emergency room visits is double the statewide average. There are many reasons for these disparities, but chief among them is poor air quality, which disproportionately impacts communities of color and exacerbates social determinants of health.
Today, on Earth Day, Maura took action to improve air quality in the Springfield area. Her office is launching an air monitoring program which will install 80 air sensors across the city and collect important data to inform public health response measures. Right now, there is only one sensor in the entire city. To further celebrate the day, Maura and her team helped plant new trees in Adams Park.

Today’s action is just one step in Maura’s plans to advance environmental justice in Massachusetts. She’s spent the past four years fighting the Trump administration’s attacks on bedrock protections like the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Act. In total, her office took more than 200 actions against the Trump administration on the environment alone!
But now, with a federal government that’s ready and willing to partner with state and local government to reverse the impacts of climate change and protect our planet, we can move forward with the urgency this crisis demands. Just today, President Biden announced a plan to cut carbon emissions by 50-52 percent by 2030 – an ambitious goal that will create millions of good, union jobs and promote environmental justice.
Maura is just getting started and, with your help, we can achieve even more victories for the environment and our communities. Will you chip in today to support this work?
