John,

One of our first-ever endorsed District Attorneys — Diana Becton — JUST
removed another dangerous, violent cop from the streets.

Let me break the story down for you real quick. And then I’m going to ask
you to help us elect even more incredible DAs like Dianne.

In 2018, Laudemer Arboleda — an unarmed Filipino man — had the police
called on him for “acting suspiciously" in a cul-de-sac. When police (not
mental health professionals) met him at the scene, he got in his car and
slowly began driving away.

At this point, Officer Andrew Hall confronted Laudemer and shot him nine
times, killing him on the spot.

The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Department tried to sweep the whole
thing under the rug, claiming their internal investigation showed “no
violations.”

But because of Diana Becton — who YOU helped elect just a few months prior
to the killing — Officer Andrew Hall was convicted yesterday of felony
manslaughter AND assault with a semiautomatic firearm.

Don’t get me wrong: this isn’t true justice.

Justice would be us never knowing Laudemer Arboleda’s name in the first
place. He’d still be alive.

But it IS a major step toward police accountability. It means one less
dangerous, violent cop on the streets. And that’s a great reason to double
down on our work.

The thing about these violent cops that not enough people talk about is
that it’s seldom their first offense.

Derek Chauvin had 18 complaints of excessive or inappropriate force filed
against him during his time in Minneapolis. EIGHTEEN.

And on March 11th of this year, Andrew Hall — the one who was just
convicted for killing Laudemer Arboleda — shot and killed an unarmed,
Black homeless man.

Their violence isn’t a one-off thing. It’s systemic. And you can’t get rid
of it by issuing fines or suspending them with pay.

You have to pull it up by the root. And in order to hold the police truly
accountable — and show them that they are NOT above the law — we need to
get rid of the District Attorneys who obediently protect cops over the
rest of us.

country. This national movement has come a long way since we launched in
2017, but there is plenty more work to be done.
