How should the United States balance individual religious liberty and the interests of the government? This perennial question has been grappled with throughout American history. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the right of practitioners of a particular faith to gather has at times conflicted with the government’s obligation to maintain public health. This eLesson explores the case of Tandon v. Newsom, where the court was asked to evaluate the balance between these two compelling interests. How did the court rule? What legal approach did they take?
