Dear John,

We have an immediate opportunity to secure ID for thousands of voters in North Carolina, and need your help to meet this challenge.

Like many cities, Charlotte has a growing population of people experiencing homelessness. With COVID and the cold temperatures during the past winter, the situation became truly dire. A local coalition of government agencies and organizations took the unprecedented step of arranging the short-term relocation of hundreds of residents into area motels and hotels.

For the next few months, thousands of formerly unsheltered people are at Charlotte motels where we can meet them, gather their essential information and handle their document needs. We can make appointments at the DMV and send rides to transport them safely. They return with an ID in hand.

Our mission is to help people get IDs so that they can vote. There is little doubt that photo ID to vote will soon be required in North Carolina. However, what many people don’t realize is that a current government-issued photo ID is also required to access housing, healthcare and jobs.

On average, it costs $100 to pay for each person’s identity documents, DMV fees, and transportation. If you can chip in $10, $25, or even $100, it will make a direct and immediate difference for our neighbors.

Thank you for being part of our community,

Pam Pearson

General Counsel and North Carolina Voter ID Coalition Coordinator
