** Race + Power Weekly
------------------------------------------------------------
A theme we’ve been noticing in the field lately is the tension between the world we desire and the one in which we live. This is especially true for leaders of color, maybe even more so for Black women. This Race + Power weekly offers a reflection on this tension from Cyndi Suarez.
Our latest Tiny Spark podcast highlights the work of Leah Lizarondo, CEO and founder of Food Rescue Hero, which salvages food in the US and redirects it to people who need it. Her goal is to scale up enough to end world hunger. The story is an example of grand vision and practical application.
We also link to a Building Movement Project blog on how nonprofits could be connecting the work we do to the highly charged event of the week—Derek Chauvin’s trial and conviction for the murder of George Floyd—through how it impacts their staff. Finally, we offer another link to a story about Resistance, a new podcast exploring the day-to-day experiences of Black Lives Matter movement leaders.

Recently, as I was doing a Q+A session with a cohort of nonprofit leaders of color who are reading my book The Power Manual, one woman said to me, “Some of us were a bit triggered when we were reading your book. We felt that some of your ideas about personal power were magical thinking! I mean, we need to focus on systemic racism.” Read more... ([link removed])

Why Nonprofits Should Care about Derek Chauvin’s Trial and Conviction ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
Many of us have been working under the direst of conditions this past year as we adjusted to the pandemic. Some of us have also been working in a highly significant context of the spectacle of the public murder of Black people. This piece by Building Movement Project suggests that “nonprofits start talking now and plan ongoing conversations about how this trial and the deaths of so many other Black people and people of color at the hands of institutions charged with protecting us affects the people we work with every day, and put in place strategies and action steps.” Read more...
