Happy Earth Day!

Today we celebrate our precious planet Earth.

When we sent out our issues survey last month, the response we received as your top priority issue was the environment.

And that's no surprise. The damaging impact of the climate crisis is already wreaking havoc on our lives as we know it — and if we don't act soon, it's no exaggeration to say there may be no earth left for future generations to enjoy. Anyone with kids or grandkids knows in their gut this is totally unacceptable!

As Attorney General during the last four years, I worked closely with my state AG colleagues, bringing no less than 200 actions to fight back against delays and rollbacks of environmental protections at the federal level, not to mention myriad new anti-environment rules. Now, we're continuing our work by trying to (along with the Biden administration) both undo the messes Trump and his EPA made AND push for policy that effectively addresses the climate crisis.

At the state level, I've taken the lead on a bill in Oregon, HB 2377 — which holds corporations accountable for the environmental waste they create and increases funding for environmental cleanup efforts we so desperately need.

Even with a new administration, we need to leave no stone unturned when it comes to combatting the climate crisis.

So, recently I've joined letters in support of two petitions: one challenging the Safe Drinking Water Act’s current policy on the amount of lead legally allowed to be present in water in homes across America and another challenging the EPA’s decision not to strengthen U.S. air quality standards.

The effects of climate change are vast and devastating.

And we have seen evidence of the impacts of the climate crisis right here in Oregon. After wildfires destroyed one million acres of our land, residents needed to stay indoors for a week because the air was too hazardous to breathe. As a result of the wildfires, over 4,000 homes and structures burned to the ground. In addition, droughts have affected our farmers and caused highly toxic algae blooms that put marine life at risk and negatively impact our economy.

These are the kinds of issues and problems that are avoidable, but we are running out of time to act.

Earth Day is the perfect day to promote environmental protections. From my survey, I now know that the environment is as big of a priority for you as it is for me. Can I count on you to join my fight today? TAKE ACTION: Donate now to make an impact >>
