Christiane Amanpour is one of the most lauded voices in media across the world — and she's is celebrating with us at our first-ever festival of fact-checking, United Facts of America!
On May 13, Poynter President Neil Brown will interview Amanpour, CNN’s chief international correspondent, about her storied career, the problems of eroding trust in journalism, and, of course, the importance of facts.
Get all-access tickets to this four-day virtual event and celebrate facts with Poynter, PolitiFact, Amanpour and many more. |
Let's back up. Amanpour will help us conclude the the final day of United Facts of America. But each day features hours of lively, thoughtful, conversations about facts. All virtual!
DAY 1: DEMOCRACY
On May 10, we’ll get down to the basics: facts and democracy. In the United States, perhaps the epicenter of this duo is in Georgia, where a close presidential election and two Senate runoffs had Georgia on everyone’s minds. Arguably no person was more salient than Gabriel Sterling, the Republican Georgia elections official at the center of countering misinformation surrounding the 2020 election in his state. Tia Mitchell, Washington correspondent for the Atlanta Journal Constitution, will interview Sterling, and the two will get at the heart of how facts and democracy go hand-in-hand, even when it feels as if the truth is mired in rhetoric and partisanship.
VIP ticket holders will join CNN’s Brian Stelter and PolitiFact Editor-in-Chief Angie Drobnic Holan on Monday evening for an exclusive interview on the role of media and fact-checking being “Reliable Sources” of information for the electorate.
DAY 2: COVID-19
On May 11, we’re wasting no time in talking about the disastrous effect of misinformation on public health. PolitiFact’s 2020 Lie of the Year was coronavirus disinformation and denial, for the persistent and permeating effects of lies about the pandemic. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (and internet darling), will talk with PolitiFact Managing Editor Katie Sanders about the relationship between health information and the public.
DAY 3: TECHNOLOGY
On May 12, we’ll consider the big questions around big tech. Aaron Sharockman, PolitiFact’s executive director, will interview Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., about Section 230 and possible internet regulation in the U.S. We’ll also sit down with professional fact-checkers to discuss how their work is evolving by the minute when it comes to tech platforms and regulation.
DAY 4: CULTURE
On May 13, we'll look internationally, and to the future. In addition to our conversation with Christiane Amanpour, you'll hear from Steven Hassan, an American mental health counselor who has written on the subject of mind control and how to help people who have been harmed by the experience. We'll talk about Q and the cult of personality surrounding Donald Trump.
Those are some of the big names. But there’s so much more to this event! We’ll talk with experts about how we all can better share the truth with our friends and constituents in times of crisis. We’ll chat with influencers, who have seen misinformation on their feeds and have actually done something about it. And hopefully, we'll chat with you during our VIP happy hour.
Your general admission ticket includes access to each day of programming, including the conversations with Christiane Amanpour and Dr. Anthony Fauci.
Your VIP ticket includes all of that, plus a virtual, interactive happy hour on opening night with CNN's Brian Stelter and PolitiFact fact-checkers. |
P.S. This virtual festival is for everyone interested in fact-based expression, civic engagement and the role of facts in a free society. Please share with your friends and family! |
