Friends:

Have you heard of the For the People Act? It's a bold, forward-thinking and expansive legislative package that protects and strengthens our democracy.

This bill takes aim at government corruption, bolsters and expands voting rights, and makes huge strides toward getting money out of politics.

I’d like to take a few moments to talk you through this transformative legislation. I’m also going to ask you to sign on as a Citizen Co-Sponsor of the bill—because it’s going to take all of us raising our voices together to pass this bill in the Senate and rebuild our democracy.

There are three major parts to the For the People Act:

  1. VOTING RIGHTS

I’m particularly proud that the Voter Empowerment Act—the bill I introduced with the late Congressman John Lewis—is a key component of this reform package.

It’s based on the simple premise that we should be making it easier for Americans to vote. That means expanding early and absentee voting; restoring voting rights to formerly incarcerated individuals; prohibiting voter roll purges (like what we saw last year in Georgia and Ohio); requiring 15 days of early voting for federal elections nationwide; and more funding for election security.

  1. CLEAN ELECTIONS

When the NRA wants to prevent gun reform, they funnel money into the campaigns of candidates nationwide to make sure they don’t vote for common sense gun reform. Insurance companies do the same to block Medicare for All and prevent us from guaranteeing health care as a right, not a privilege. The story is the same with polluters. And drug companies. And oil companies. The list goes on.

The solution? Get money out of politics. The For the People Act requires Super PACs and dark money groups to disclose their donors, establishes public funding for federal election campaigns, and supports a constitutional amendment to end Citizens United.

  1. ETHICS REFORM

The Trump administration offered a masterclass in abuse of power—our legislation strengthens ethics laws across all branches of government. The For the People Act obligates presidents and vice presidents to release their tax returns, tightens disclosure requirements for lobbyists, and puts a stop to the revolving door between industry and government.

Become a Citizen Co-Sponsor of the For the People Act

After historic turnout and increased mail-in voting in 2020, GOP lawmakers have introduced 253 bills with provisions that restrict voting access in 43 states. It’s on Congress to fight back, protect our democracy and dismantle the systems of voter suppression that have silenced too many Americans for far too long.

But while the For the People Act passed the House, it’s going to be an uphill battle to ensure its passage in the Senate. That’s why it’s so critical that you add your voice and become a Citizen Co-Sponsor today. We need to come together and demand government accountability, ethics and transparency.

Thank you for standing with us in the fight for democracy,
Kirsten
