A big step forward for students in Connecticut
Dear John,

Moments ago, ConnCAN’s long-time goal of an overhaul of school funding in the Constitution State moved one step closer to reality ([link removed]) when the core elements of the bill it championed, SB948 An Act Addressing Education Funding and Racial Equity in Connecticut, were included in the budget passed by the General Assembly Appropriations Committee.

The historic reforms put the focus on equity and opportunity with an additional $110 million for schools above and beyond the governor's initial proposal. These changes will provide communities with concentrated poverty, such as Bridgeport and New Haven, far greater resources to serve kids while at the same time providing the largest increase to charter funding in over a decade.

ConnCAN Executive Director Subira Gordon and Board Chair Derrick Diggs listen to parents and school leaders in January 2020, the start of their campaign to secure funding reform.

The budget proposal has now cleared a key committee hurdle and is on track to reach the governor's desk before session ends in June.

The progress comes at a time when advocates across the country are aiming for bold wins for students and is another proof point of the possibility for change in red and blue states alike. I look forward to keeping you apprised of the next steps along the way for this goal and the other major goals across the 50CAN network.

Best,
