Dear John,
Yesterday, as we waited for the verdict in the trial of Derek Chauvin — the police officer who murdered George Floyd — my son said to me: “If he can’t be convicted, no cop can.”
I told him I thought the same thing when I was his age, as I watched the Rodney King verdict come in. And I remembered the feeling of heartbreak and anger that washed over the crowd when I was on the streets of New York twenty years ago, hearing that the officers who killed Amadou Diallo were acquitted of all charges.
I felt that same sense of impending despair as I waited with my son to hear the jury’s decision yesterday. Instead, this time was different.
It felt different not just because of the verdict. One decision doesn’t fix policing in this country. It cannot repair the broken trust of Black and Brown communities betrayed by centuries of systemic racism, mass incarceration, and police brutality.
But it felt different because my son saw a verdict I did not. And he also saw all those people marching last year. He saw the best of America, furiously unsatisfied with the way things were, and still are, and reaching for something brighter and better.
One verdict cannot heal the pain of George Floyd’s family and loved ones. It cannot bring back Ma’Khia Bryant, Daunte Wright, Adam Toledo, Breonna Taylor and so many of our other brothers and sisters lost in the hands of racist violence.
After George Floyd’s murder, we called for a path forward rooted in justice, legislation, and healing. Today, and everyday forward we join partners across the country to continue fighting for justice and healing on the front lines, we need Congress to step up and ACT.
We will keep fighting for a world where Black Lives Matter. There is much work to be done. Thank you for being with us on this path towards justice.
In Solidarity,
— Nisha Anand
