John — As you likely now know, Derek
Chauvin was found guilty on all charges for the murder of George
Floyd.

While we are relieved that the correct verdict was reached, this
one case does not solve the problem of police brutality or
broken-taillight policing in Black communities.

We
must honor the life of George Floyd by fighting for police
accountability and criminal justice reform.

We can start by passing The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act
— which includes a number of much needed reforms that I and
others have championed for many, many years, including my own
Stop Militarizing Law Enforcement Act.

But
police reform should not end there. I will be re-introducing
legislation that would require the appointment of independent
police agencies and special prosecutors to investigate and
prosecute cases where a police officer killed a civilian in the
line of duty. Other legislation would empower the Department of
Justice to prosecute police officers for murder. Another bill
would eliminate "cooling off" periods for officers accused of
misconduct, so we have a lot of work to do.

And we must keep doing that work. Onward.

— Hank
