The most important elections in 2021, with tremendous national consequences, are this year’s statewide elections in Virginia.
And in the biggest race on Virginia’s ballot – the race for governor – we’ve enthusiastically endorsed a true progressive champion, Jennifer Carroll Foy, in the Democratic primary.
Virginia is a incredibly important bellwether state, vital to America’s political landscape in so many ways. Its state elections this year will have a serious impact on the 2022 national midterms.
For starters, this is our first chance to hold the Far Right’s Trump insurrectionists accountable in a major election. A disproportionate number of people making up the insurrectionist mob in Washington on January 6 – including extremist public officials – hail from nearby Virginia. And the expected front-runner for governor in the Republican field is a far-right extremist who could easily be considered Virginia’s Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In addition, the organizing work and voter outreach we do in Virginia this year, especially around an exciting candidate like Jennifer Carroll Foy – who would be Virginia’s first woman governor and our nation’s very first Black woman governor of ANY state – could help us flip two Republican U.S. House seats in next year’s midterms. And that could make THE difference in our ability to stop the Far Right from taking control of the U.S. House via their aggressive gerrymandering in other states.

Virginia’s political transformation over the past several years has been the story of progressive change that we hope to see replicated at the national level. It’s an inspiring story that People For the American Way has been, and remains, deeply invested in and that Jennifer Carroll Foy has helped lead.
The example set in Virginia for other states – especially other southern states – shows just how much state elections matter. Since flipping from red to blue, Virginia has abolished the death penalty, legalized cannabis, made great strides in protecting health care for its residents, and so much more. Lives are getting better… for millions of people.
Electing progressives is the only way to maintain safeguards against the far-right legislative attacks on the American Way that we’re seeing in other states. You know the list: voter suppression, attacks on LGBTQ+ people, disastrous environmental policies, union busting …
Progressive leadership like Jennifer Carroll Foy’s would mean that the meaningful reimagining of public safety through policing and criminal justice reform is very much on the table … as is Virginia becoming the final state needed to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution…
Foy is the right person to continue the vital progressive change that is already benefiting Virginians in so many ways and showing what is possible in a southern state that was once the seat of the Confederacy.
Beyond the historic nature of electing Foy as governor, her record as a public servant, her lived experience, and her vision for Virginia all make her a true standout among a field of strong Democratic candidates.
People For endorsed Foy in her elections for state legislature and we are proud of her leadership in the House of Delegates, where she championed the expansion of Medicaid and passage of the Equal Rights Amendment. She has fought for policies to protect workers and the environment, and to help families make it through the pandemic.
As a magistrate judge, she had a first-hand look at a two-tiered criminal justice system that often devastates lives and families without making our communities safer, and knows we need solutions. As a public defender, she advocated for people who would otherwise have had no voice and no chance at getting justice out of that system.
Let’s keep making progress and show America that the state that was once the seat of the Confederacy can continue to set an example as a bastion of progress, equality, and justice.
