Washington, DC - OCA-Asian Pacific American Advocates joins in the chorus of other grassroots organizers, community advocacy groups, and fellow civil rights organizations in feeling a sense of relief as accountability towards former officer Derek Chauvin has been upheld in the murder of George Floyd ([link removed]) . We know, however, this huge victory is just one small step towards justice. In order to achieve true justice, OCA will continue to be staunch advocates against the excessive use of force, transformative changes to law enforcement protocols, and the reimagining of police presence in our communities.
“The charges against former officer Chauvin reveal that despite a flawed criminal justice system, accountability is key in the fight for justice,” says Linda Ng, National President of OCA. “We know that there is much work to be done concerning the wellbeing of people of color, especially Black and Brown communities, in the United States. OCA will continue to work with other advocates and organizations on the issues of transformative community justice to ensure that the future of this country is a place where we all feel safe.”
If you, your family members, someone you know, or community members have experienced xenophobia, discrimination, or harassment, please report the incident using our hate crime/incident reporting tool at www.aapihatecrimes.org.
OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates is a national civil rights organization of community advocates dedicated to improving the social, political, and economic well-being of Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs).
