=============================

John,

The conviction of George Floyd's murderer brought many people a measure of relief and the validation of having a jury affirm that the violence that police inflict on Black communities is real and is wrong. It was an acknowledgement of George Floyd’s humanity. At the same time, we know this verdict isn’t justice.

There is no justice in a system where we are left to wonder for months whether a murder by the police, captured on video in the light of day would be rightfully recognized as a crime, a wrong, a harm done. The system that enabled the police to take George Floyd’s life — and those of Daunte Wright, Adam Toledo, and countless others — is still intact. In fact, just after the verdict, a Cleveland police officer shot and killed 16-year-old Ma'Khia Bryant seconds after arriving on the scene. Real accountability goes beyond one conviction — its aim must be dismantling the system that created the conditions for this to happen and continues to criminalize and kill our children, parents, and neighbors.

But we also reflect in this moment on the love, humanity, and organizing that brought this small measure of accountability. We pay our respects to the strength of George Floyd’s family, their neighbors and supporters in the Minneapolis community, and the people who continue to show up day after day to say that Black lives matter and to show that another future is possible.

Our work now is to grow our movement and fight for a world without police and prisons and for investment in institutions that actually keep communities safe — housing, healthcare, thriving schools, and all the resources we need to care for each other and live full and dignified lives.

In Solidarity,
