Hello —

For years, Donald Trump fanned the flames of hatred and in his final year as President, he gave the coronavirus race-baiting names — provoking racism and discrimination against the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community.

Words matter, especially when they come from the sitting President of the United States. Trump may no longer be in office, but the damage his words and actions have caused remains to this day.

Last year alone, anti-Asian violence increased 1,900% with nearly one in three Asian Americans reporting being the target of a verbal assault with racial slurs since the start of the pandemic. It’s past time we stand up against the bigotry, hate, and discrimination the Asian-American community faces across the nation.

That’s why I’m proud to co-sponsor my good friend Mazie Hirono’s COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act, which would provide the Department of Justice and local law enforcement more tools to combat hate crimes.

We have a moral imperative to work to end racism and violence against Asian Americans. I hope you will join me in signing on to my petition demanding Congress pass the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act today:

There’s a great deal of work we need to do to combat racism, discrimination, and violence in our country. We must stand together in support of the AAPI community.

Thank you, as always, for taking action.
