First, they put us in chains. We fought our way to freedom.
Then, they terrorized us with lynch mobs. We kept working for progress.
Then came the laws. The poll tests. The poll taxes. Segregated bathrooms, water fountains, transportation and schools. We protested and won.
Every victory has come at a great cost. Our forebears were enslaved, mocked, beaten, disenfranchised and killed. But we marched on because we can’t abide hatred and discrimination. We won’t tolerate being treated as anything less than equal. We have always had scars, but we’ve also always had something else: faith.
Georgia Republicans are working hard for a new Jim Crow. They want to turn our joyful votes into impossible chores, and our faith into submission. Well, I’m keeping the faith and I’m going to continue to put in the work. I hope you will, too.
We aren’t going to stand for this. We’ve fought too hard – and we still have so much work to do. Let’s keep moving forward – together.
