John xxxxxx,

A Minneapolis jury has convicted former police officer Derek Chauvin on all three counts of second degree unintentional murder, third degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter in the death of George Floyd.

While this verdict provides a measure of accountability, it cannot bring George Floyd back. There can be no justice for those whose lives have been forever changed by his murder.

That this verdict was ever in question shows us just how much work we have to do. Today, we must renew our commitment to ending police violence in America.

The House of Representatives has passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act to demilitarize the police and end qualified immunity for police officers.

It also includes the Eric Garner Excessive Use of Force Prevention Act to criminalize the use of chokeholds by police — legislation I originally introduced in 2015 after Eric was killed by police.

The Senate must pass this legislation immediately. But we must not stop there. We must continue working to end police violence in America and systematically reform this country’s police forces.

Thank you for your commitment to making change.

Keep the faith,

Hakeem
