Last Chance for Animals (LCA) is encouraging supporters who live in the U.S. state of Texas and the Canadian province of Manitoba to speak up against dangerous ag-gag laws that are progressing through the legislative process. See below how you can help.

Proposed Texas Ag-gag law: Introduced by Representative John Cyrier (R) on January 27, 2021, HB 1480 ([link removed]) / SB 472 ([link removed]) is an amendment to the Agriculture Code, and contains ag-gag language that would make it illegal for non-profits like LCA to perform undercover investigations in Texas. HB 1480 was referred to the Agricultural House Committee and passed unanimously; it is currently waiting to be voted on by the House.

Although the Bill is still early in the approval process, it is moving quickly with favourable votes. This is why it is important for Texans to speak out against this dangerous ag-gag bill NOW.

Proposed Manitoba Ag-gag law: Bill 62 ([link removed]) , the Animal Diseases Amendment Act, seeks to silence activists by making it illegal to document farmed animals during transport, on farms, and in slaughterhouses. LCA is asking supporters in Manitoba to contact their Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) to voice opposition to Bill 62. See below how you can help.

In Canada, ag-gag laws are a direct violation of freedom of speech under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. During a short period of less than two years, provincial ag-gag laws have been passed in Alberta (Bill 27) and Ontario (Bill 156). Both of these laws were enacted in a short time frame without proper public consult and were heavily supported by Canada’s animal agriculture industry.

Ag-gag laws seek to hide the truth about what is happening to animals on factory farms, in transit, and in slaughterhouses, and are usually supported by industries that have financial stakes in the animal agricultural industry. Although ag-gag laws are targeted at animal rights activists, they can also make it illegal to expose public health and safety concerns; workers rights abuses; and environmental concerns.

Unfortunately, ag-gag laws have been sweeping North America. To date in the United States, six states have active ag-gag laws and in Canada, two provinces. LCA monitors ag-gag legislation and campaigns against it as it arises. Click here to learn more. ([link removed])
