On May 25th, 2020, the world watched in horror and agony as footage of George Floyd’s violent murder began to infiltrate the Internet and news networks. The truth was undeniable: Mr. Floyd was murdered by Officer Derek Chauvin. Our hearts broke, our anger grew, our devastation deepened as we listened to Mr. Floyd beg for breath, for his life, for his mother.
We witnessed – point blank -- Derek Chauvin, unfeeling and indignant, take life away from a 46 year old man.
Mr. Floyd’s death ignited a global uprising in which the world poured their voices, their pain, their desperation into demanding justice for Mr. Floyd and for all Black lives. The Broward Democratic Party joins these demands for life free from terrorism – free from constant and unrelenting fear, free from violent, senseless death at the hands of law enforcement – for all Black men, women and children. To declare that Black lives matter is the minimum: we must insist that this devastating and unacceptable pattern of police shootings end now.
Today, the jury reached a verdict. While the Floyd family must live with their grief, one as deep and vast as the ocean, we see the waves of justice finally crashing to the shore.
The Broward Democratic Party extends our wishes of peace, love and warmth to Mr. Floyd’s family and we commend the jury and their indisputably fair ‘guilty’ verdict. Derek Chauvin is responsible for the extinguishing of human life and his sentence should reflect the depth of his crime, the craters of the grief and pain that Mr. Floyd’s family will continue to feel in the wake of his death.
May this stepping stone of justice lend itself towards a pathway for an equitable tomorrow free from trauma, terror and a stunningly unjust loss of life for all Black Americans.
Derek Chauvin is guilty.
