While we were relieved to hear guilty verdicts for the police officer who murdered George Floyd, we also are fully aware that we have much farther to go as a country to heal.

Starting to heal means passing the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, a bill to ensure that violent police officers are held accountable, deter racial profiling, demilitarize our police force, and much more.

Sadly, the Senate blocked this critical effort to challenge system racism. If corporate Democrats continue to refuse to end the filibuster, the bill will stay stuck and systemic racism will keep getting worse in our police departments.

The bottom line is this: we refuse to let politicians get a pass for promoting policies that perpetuate systemic racism. Being a Democrat does not exempt any Senator from responsibility for blocking progress on police reform.

That’s why Our Revolution has invested significant resources to push Democrats to pass sweeping police reform legislation in Maryland and Illinois this year, and we’re doubling-down on electing progressive Attorneys General and District Attorneys who are committed to rooting out structural racism. But we can’t let Congress off the hook.
