In this email, I'll be talking about police brutality, anti-Black racism, and the Derek Chauvin verdict. Please only read if you feel comfortable doing so. To take action, you can sign our petition calling on the Senate to bring the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act to a vote. Thank you for reading. -- Dwight

On May 25, 2020, Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on George Floyd's neck and back for 9 minutes and 29 seconds. George Floyd was murdered. His death led to activists here in Philadelphia -- and around the world -- uniting to demand justice and an end to systemic police violence that is killing Black and brown people.

Derek Chauvin was charged with second and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. And today, the jury has determined Chauvin is guilty of his crimes.

John, although this is the delivery of justice, George should still be alive today. This guilty verdict is not where our fight ends.

History shows us that too often officers get to walk away from guilty verdicts with minimal sentences. Chauvin must be dealt the full force of the law and held fully accountable for his crimes, but that is still not a guarantee. It's why we have to reform our justice system from the ground up and create a national standard for policing. It's why we need the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.

One verdict won't change the system. One piece of legislation won't right this injustice. But the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act is a necessary step toward expansive and historic policing reform. You can sign on in support of this legislation here.

Today, my heart is with George Floyd's family and loved ones. And I am standing in solidarity, as a Black man, with the activists on the frontlines of this movement for justice.

Thank you,

Dwight
