Advancement Project National Office applauds today’s guilty verdict of former police officer Derek Chauvin in the hopes that it might bring some form of peace and healing to George Floyd’s family and friends, who have suffered irreparable harm and loss at the hands of Chauvin and the Minneapolis Police Department.

George Floyd’s murder sparked the largest uprising for racial justice in our nation has ever seen. Today’s verdict would not have happened without the organizers in Minneapolis and beyond who ensured that the nation and the world could not turn away from this horrific act of brutal and racist police violence.

However, we know that a guilty verdict will not prevent the next act of police violence from occurring. Chauvin may have been held accountable for this murder, but we must continue to hold the system of policing accountable as well .

As our criminal legal system continues to perpetuate violence, incarceration and abuse that traps and terrorizes Black and Brown communities, we must recognize that criminal convictions are not justice.

Just last week, when 20-year-old Daunte Wright was murdered by a cop for having air fresheners in his car a few miles away from where Derek Chauvin was standing trial, it became even more clear that we still have much work to do .

To win real and lasting justice, we must focus on transforming the entire criminal legal system and moving beyond policing. Advancement Project National Office is dedicated to continuing to work alongside organizers and activists nationwide to build a future where all people can be free and safe from harm.

Onward.
