Dear John,
It is a fraught time in Minnesota, as we all anxiously await a verdict in the Chauvin trial. And yet later this week, the Minnesota Senate will be debating and voting on the Senate State Government Omnibus bill (SF 1831) that includes a provision to ban RCV in local elections as well as other measures that make it harder to vote on election day. We need to address this anti-democratic effort but also take action to support our communities that are hurting, and you have an opportunity to take action on both fronts.
First, we need you to weigh in and ask your senator to vote no on the Senate Omnibus bill which includes a prohibition of Ranked Choice Voting for local offices, the repeal of RCV for cities who have already adopted it, and other measures in the bill that make it harder to vote on election day -- like provisional balloting, elimination of vouching, and limitations on ballot boxes. We must let the Senate know that Minnesotans do not support these efforts to usurp local control and take our democracy backward.
We’ve made it easy for you; this link includes a sample message to send your senator and Majority Leader Paul Gazelka. Of course, it’s always better to put the message in your own words, and you can edit the message to make it your own.
Second, FairVote MN wants to support members of our community who have been impacted by the Chauvin trial and the death of Daunte Wright. Brooklyn Center Community Schools are collecting essential items for the community, and you can help!
Drop off donations directly at the Blue Barn, 6500 Humboldt Ave N, Brooklyn Center this week through Thursday from 9am-1pm OR drop off donations at the courtyard outside FairVote MN offices, 550 Vandalia St, St. Paul (near Lake Monster Brewing patio) from 3-6pm on Wednesday, April 21. FairVote MN staff will be there to collect donations and deliver them to Brooklyn Center. You can see the list of requested items to donate here. You can sign up to help sort and distribute donations here, or donate to the Brooklyn Center Schools–Student and Family Support fund.
Now is a time for all of us to come together and stand up for our local communities at a time we need it most.
Thank you so much for your help and support,
Your FairVote MN Team |
