John,
When Mitt Romney re-introduced his Social Security-cutting TRUST Act last week, something was missing: A whole bunch of House Democratic co-sponsors.
When Mitt first introduced his bill to fast-track cuts to Social Security and Medicare, 12 House Democrats stood by his side as original co-sponsors, hoping that “moderate” voters would reward them. There was only one problem: There are almost no voters who want to cut Social Security and Medicare.
Half of Mitt’s House Democrats lost their re-elections last year. And four more decided not to try to cut Social Security after winning their re-elections.
The Democratic Party built our Social Security system starting over 80 years ago. Social Security Works is making sure that today’s Democrats keep Social Security’s promise. Chip in $7 today!
To be sure, even a Democrat who flirts with cutting Social Security is better than a member of Trump’s Republican Party.
But the point is that Democrats who embrace the wrong-headed rhetoric that cherished American institutions like Social Security and Medicare must be sacrificed to the altar of deficit fearmongering are fighting for a position without a constituency outside of the Wall Street Journal editorial pages.
We applaud Reps. Abigail Spanberger, Dean Phillips, Jim Cooper and Chrissy Houlahan for their courage to back away from a bad idea.
Social Security Works is fighting to hold our elected representatives accountable to their promises. Chip in $7 to fight to EXPAND, never cut, our Social Security system!
Thanks,
Michael Phelan Social Security Works
