Hi John,
Illinois's 13th state Senate district is a place for rising stars -- Barack Obama, state Attorney General Kwame Raoul, and now RFS alum Robert Peters.
On this week's podcast, I spoke with
Illinois state Senator Robert Peters, who was born to a mom with addiction problems and then adopted by a social worker and civil rights lawyer. His adopted parents raised him to be politically active in the Hyde Park area of Chicago -- that's where he got a taste for activism at a young age.
Sen. Peters had a tough childhood -- he was born deaf, had a speech impediment, and tended to get into trouble as a kid. In spite of deaths in his family, unemployment, and a little bit of aimlessness, Robert's grit and commitment to his community brought him home.
Now, he's the state senator representing the neighborhood he grew up in -- cosponsoring 13 different bills in his first year and leading on making Illinois the first state to end cash bail.
