We all know that the Senate Grim Reaper Mitch McConnell is against getting rid of the filibuster. Ending it would mean Democrats can finally pass laws on gun control, voting rights, climate change, and health care -- the laws that voters demand but wealthy GOP donors loathe.
But moderate Democratic Senators like Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema are also standing in the way of abolishing the filibuster. Why are these Democrats siding with something that Former President Obama has called a "Jim Crow relic?"
Manchin and Sinema don't yet understand that the filibuster directly harms their own constituents, and they're fixated on preserving "tradition."
This shortsightedness is frustrating to say the least, but there's something we can do: We can run ads in West Virginia and Arizona to educate Manchin and Sinema on the real consequences of blocking highly popular legislation. We've already started a small run of these ads, and the feedback has been hugely positive. Voters have seen our work and are letting their Senators know they want the filibuster gone. We have to build on this success and push NOW, but we don't have funding lined up for the full ad campaign it will take to abolish this long-standing obstructor of progress.
To expand our filibuster ads to more West Virginians and Arizonans, we need to raise $5,500 by midnight TONIGHT.
