Hi there:

Today we mourn the loss of Walter Mondale, an American hero and statesman.

I first met him when I was 17. I told him I was interested in public service, and asked if he had any advice. He smiled. "Don't worry about sleep," he said. "You can sleep when you're dead."

His point, I think, was that people in public service should work tirelessly to make a positive impact. The work should continue even when it seems exhausting. As Secretary of State I've tried to follow his advice by working every day to protect and strengthen the right to vote.

Sleep well, Mr. Vice President. You've earned it. You made America better.
