Sudan's democracy is moving in the right direction but there are many Islamist groups in the country with links to the old regime who are trying in every way to boycott the reforms and destroy the new climate of freedom for citizens and Christian communities.

Considered for decades one of the most fundamentalist countries in the world, Sharia law in Sudan has oppressed and persecuted citizens of the Christian faith for years.

Let us not allow the pressure of these groups to prevent this momentous change. Help end Sharia in the Sudan!

SIGN THE PETITION

Dear John,

A global campaign to end Sharia is taking off.

On several occasions we have shown our determination to defend human rights and religious freedom, especially in countries where Islamic fundamentalism has deprived men and women of fundamental rights.

Together with your help, we have been and we will always be in the front line to defend religious freedom, everywhere in the world. And our struggle in this direction will continue unabated.

However, today I would like to inform you of an extremely positive fact that fills us with hope: the change in Sudan.

Considered for decades one of the most fundamentalist countries in the world, Sharia law in Sudan has oppressed and persecuted citizens of the Christian faith for years.

But today, thanks to the path taken by the new transitional government, religious freedom and respect for human rights could become a reality in Sudan.

The majority of the Sudanese people greatly appreciate this new wind of freedom, but a minority of the population, made up of traditionalists linked to the old fundamentalist schemes, is trying in every way to hinder the change.

It is necessary to make our support felt by the Sudanese government so that it realises that the path taken to protect fundamental rights such as religious freedom is not going unnoticed in the eyes of the world.

Sign up to support the changes implemented by the Transitional Government of Sudan!

Just as the US and Israeli governments have already done, we too must support the Sudanese government in this process of change.

Here are the momentous changes that this new government would like to integrate into the country:

  • Abolition of Islam as the state religion;
  • Abolition of the death penalty for those who change religion and abandon Islam, and the crime of apostasy removed from the penal code;
  • Approval of the decree on religious freedom for all believers and churches in the country;
  • Ban on the marriage of girls and the outlawing of infibulation;
  • Allocation of land to Churches for the construction of Christian places of worship.

These important and courageous measures taken by the country's transitional government have been appreciated not only by the bishops of the Catholic, Coptic and Evangelical Churches, but also by the U.S. Administration, which recently decided to remove Sudan, after 25 years, from the blacklist of terrorist countries.

Sign up to support the new Sudanese government's commitment to guarantee full religious freedom for Christians!

Sudan's democracy is moving in the right direction but it is up to us to support the Provisional Council's recent decisions in favour of full democracy and full respect for religious freedom, the dignity of girls and human rights.

There are many Islamist groups in the country with links to the old regime who are trying in every way to boycott the reforms and destroy the new climate of freedom for citizens and Christian communities.

Let us not allow the pressure of these groups to prevent this momentous change!

Sign the petition to support government initiatives to: abolish Islam as the state religion, end sharia law, repeal the death penalty for those who change religion to abandon Islam, remove the crime of apostasy from the criminal code, approval of the decree on religious freedom for all believers and churches in the country, and outlaw child marriage.

Sign up to support respect for the human rights of girls and women.

Thank you,

Gregory Mertz and the entire CitizenGO Team
