Remember when Mitch McConnell rushed through Amy Coney Barrett's Supreme Court nomination one week before the 2020 election even though millions of Americans had already cast their ballots?
What you might not remember is that McConnell then gloated that Democrats “won't be able to do much about this for a long time to come.”
McConnell was wrong. Joe Biden has now issued an executive order establishing an independent commission to study and reform the Supreme Court -- that means expanding the court to overcome the GOP's 6-3 majority and setting term limits are on the table. And the House has introduced legislation to increase the number of justices from 9 to 13.
Our judicial system is broken, that much is clear. In one term, Donald Trump was able to appoint three lifetime judges to the Supreme Court. Nothing in the Constitution says that we need 9 justices on the court. If nothing changes, the 6-3 conservative majority will be making decisions on voting rights, reproductive rights, gun laws, and so much more for decades to come.
