Dear John,
For years, the U.S. has invested massive amounts of money into the Pentagon—committing more than half of our discretionary federal budget to preparing for war. When you take into account domestic “security” spending on things like abusive immigration enforcement and federal prisons, militarized spending makes up nearly two-thirds of the total discretionary budget.
Imagine if programs that support peace and justice were funded at that level!
That is the reinvestment we’re calling for, and in the meantime we’re working with communities to meet the needs that exist today and can’t wait. Make a gift today to support AFSC. Your gift will go directly to programs in the U.S. and around the world working to overcome violence, poverty, and oppression.
As Congress deliberates over the Biden administration’s federal budget proposal, it’s very important that they hear from organizations like AFSC, the coalitions and faith groups we are part of, and the people most impacted by their decisions – including you! That’s why we’re mobilizing to persuade policy makers to prioritize peace with justice over military spending.
Lives are at stake as Congress decides how our tax dollars will be spent. How much will fund harmful immigration agencies like ICE and CBP versus the Office of Refugee Resettlement or foreign aid to help alleviate poverty? And how much will be put toward war planes versus dignified housing, unemployment support, education, health care, and a clean environment for all?
Your gift today helps us advocate for a better future.
AFSC has seen firsthand what a difference a change in priorities could make. As the pandemic took hold, we worked side by side with people who are housing insecure to establish a Housing Emergency hotline in Georgia, now staffed by 100 volunteers. We have worked with farmworker communities to deliver food, masks, and COVID testing to immigrants left out of federal pandemic relief programs. And we have documented and responded to human rights violations arising from militaristic U.S. foreign policy.
Through our work with communities around the world, we also know how much is possible with the right kind of investment, grounded in respect for the worth and dignity of every person.
If it is within your means, please donate today.
Thank you for all make possible.
