The Broward Democratic Party Condemns Ron DeSantis and Republicans for the Criminalization of Peaceful Protesters in the State of Florida

 

Today is a dark day for freedom of speech in our state!

 

Republican Governor Ron DeSantis signed CS/HB 1 into law, which puts unnecessary and unprecedented restrictions on peaceful demonstrations in public. This is a direct assault on the civil liberties of all Floridians, driven by their opposition to Black protestors and their allies in recent years.

 

In the wake of Donald Trump's 2016 election, we have witnessed violence against our Black, Hispanic, Asian, and LGBTQ+ communities, among others, many of whom make up our front lines as essential workers. The broad reach of this law will blur the lines when it comes to exercising our First Amendment rights to stand against racial, economic, and all other forms of injustice. The constant attacks on these groups are of grave concern to us all.

 

We strongly denounce this action and call on all Floridians who believe in fairness and who support the First Amendment to our United States Constitution to hold these officials responsible for this disgraceful piece of legislation.
