Since the beginning of the pandemic, there has been an increase in violence against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders across the nation. Violent and deadly attacks, like the devastating shooting in Georgia which took 8 lives, including 6 Asian American women, have been spurred by inexcusable rhetoric from many of our country’s leaders.
There is absolutely no place for hatred and violence in San Diego county, or our nation — our community members should not have to live in fear.
Recently, I joined local AAPI leaders, including the San Diego Asican Pacific Islanders Coalition, the Asian Business Association, and AARP, in a virtual town hall to discuss this issue that has been increasingly present over the past year, but has existed for decades of American history.
Action to denounce hate against the Asian American Pacific Islander community is long overdue, but we have an opportunity now to come together as a community and protect our friends and neighbors. Will you join me today to support San Diego County’s resolution to denounce hate against the AAPI community?
The hatred that is deeply rooted in our nation cannot be solved overnight — it is important for us to not only speak out, but to take meaningful action to address these issues. As a community, we must educate ourselves and demand solutions that protect, uplift, and support our vibrant and diverse AAPI communities.
Thank you for reading this important note.
