John,
The residents of Washington, D.C. are entitled to full representation in Congress.
But as it now stands, they have no vote on any federal legislation that directly impacts their lives.
Giving Washington, D.C. residents a real voice in our democracy is consistent with the democratic reforms DFA members have fought for over the years.
The most basic right in a democracy is the right to vote for your representatives but residents of Washington, D.C. do not enjoy that basic right in the halls of Congress.
It is past time that they have a voice in our federal government. That’s why with the House voting on legislation this week to make Washington, D.C., the country’s 51st state we need you to join the call for D.C. Statehood today and tell your representatives that you support D.C Statehood.
Sign your name now to demand Congress support democracy and give D.C. residents the representation they deserve.
Just two years ago in 2019, the House had its first hearing on D.C. statehood in almost 25 years. Now with a D.C Statehood bill being voted on this week, there is real momentum, as people across the country are speaking out against the age-old injustice: no taxation without representation.
Voting is one of the most sacred rights in our democracy. It’s wrong that Congress would allow 700,000 people to go without it just because of where they live.
But it’s no surprise that in a city whose population is 50% people of color, Republicans are doing everything in their power to stop them from receiving full representation. They’d rather suppress the voices of D.C. residents instead of working to earn their vote.
We’ve never been closer to making D.C. statehood a reality, but we need to add your voice to the fight
Thank you for taking action. Together, we will make D.C the 51st state.
