I fully support Washington D.C. becoming our 51st state. Everyone deserves a voice in Congress, and that includes the more than 700,000 residents of D.C.

Our nation was founded with chants of, “No taxation without representation.”

But today, over 700,000 residents pay taxes to the federal government and have zero say in how those tax dollars are spent. District residents can vote for president, but only have one representative in Congress who cannot cast votes.

This is a civil rights issue. A majority of DC residents are people of color, and for more than 200 years they’ve been denied the full rights and privileges of citizenship that their peers in other states enjoy.

Democrats have tried for decades to move forward with D.C. statehood, but Washington Republicans have stood in our way every time. It’s no wonder why — Mitch McConnell even said when more people vote, Republicans lose elections.

It’s outrageous to allow partisan politics to block over 700,000 tax-paying Americans the right to adequately participate in our democracy.

Now, we finally have a chance to change that. The House of Representatives is set to vote on D.C. Statehood soon. But we have to convince enough Senators to support the measure to make this bill a reality.

Sign your name to demand Congress make Washington D.C. our 51st state and give over 700,000 residents representation. [[link removed]]
