Welcome to the new format of our monthly newsletter!

Thank you for subscribing to stay up to date with news from OutRight Action International. We are honored to have such a large, global audience interested in staying connected with us!

We are introducing this new newsletter format in order to provide an overview of activities at a glance. You will find highlights of OutRight's programmatic work from the past month, information about upcoming events, and ways to get involved. We also want you to get to know us better, so each month we will spotlight one of our colleagues. This month it is my pleasure to introduce you to our Digital Communications Officer Hala Hassan!

OutRight's UN team worked on the annual UN Commission on the Status of Women, collaborating with LGBTIQ organizations and women's rights groups from around the world to ensure inclusivity of LGBTIQ people in the UN's central process for promoting gender equality. Stay tuned for the upcoming UN New Yorker for more details!
A year after COVID-19 was declared a pandemic, we are not seeing LGBTIQ communities recover. In March 2020 OutRight launched a new call for applications to our COVID emergency fund. Applications closed last week, new grantees will be announced soon!
OutRight hosted a virtual convening of organizations, and other stakeholders including the UN Independent Expert on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, working to tackle sexual orientation and gender identity change efforts (so-called conversion therapy), aiming to share best practices and mobilize to achieve ever more bans on these harmful practices.

Hala Hassan

Hala is OutRight's Digital Communications Officer. She is originally from Lebanon, but has made a home in New York. Hala joined OutRight 7 months ago, and has been revolutionizing our digital communications across social media platforms, and our website.

Hala is also a graphic designer and illustrator – the designs you see on our social media channels are hers!

Outside the digital world Hala is a keen cook, with a particular interest in learning new ways of cooking mushrooms, and a big dog lover. Together with her partner she recently adopted Heart, a beautiful deaf dog rescued from the dog meat market in Korea.

In an article celebrating the 20th anniversary since the Netherlands became the first country to recognize same-sex marriage, Associated Press (AP) quoted our Executive Director Jessica Stern. The article was published over 500 times around the world.
On Trans Day Of Visibility, Executive Director Jessica Stern was interviewed live on DW, the German public state-owned international broadcaster. Watch the full segment.
Senior Advisor for Global Advocacy Paul Jansen was interviewed live by BBC World Service Newsday, a flagship news programme aired around the world, about the high-profile trial of Shakiro and Patricia in Cameroon, and the overall situation facing LGBTIQ people in the country. Listen (starting at 32:50).

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex people

The acronym is not exhaustive, nor is it universally accepted or used. The Q can also denote questioning. An A can be added to include asexual. Sometimes a + is added to include those not covered by the acronym, allies, and new and evolving terminology.
