The criminalization of marijuana has been wielded as a weapon against minorities in America, perpetuating structural racism and incarcerating people of color at a disproportionate rate.
Now is the time to push lawmakers to take action on cannabis decriminalization. Thousands of people are behind bars for marijuana possession even though it has been decriminalized in 34 states and counting.
Criminalizing marijuana is a structurally racist policy that needs to go -- and so do Republican lawmakers who uphold these racist policies. In 2020, the House passed a landmark bill decriminalizing marijuana, but it was stopped in the GOP-controlled Senate. Now with a Democratic majority in the Senate, we have a real chance to pass this bill.
This is a real opportunity for us to advocate for immediate change. The criminalization of marijuana and the discriminatory way it's been enforced have plagued our citizens for far too long.
