Dear Friends,

We’re proud to announce the launch of the  PEN America Campus Free Speech Guide, a first-of-its-kind digital resource providing advice for students, faculty, and administrators navigating some of the thorniest campus speech scenarios. It aims to help promote dialogue, encourage the free exchange of ideas, and ensure an inclusive environment where all community members have opportunities to be heard.

For the past three years, PEN America has been working with administrators, faculty, students, and staff across the country. We have heard time and again that there is a real need for practical, tangible advice on how to handle free speech issues that campuses face every day.

This Guide is our answer.  Even if you’re not a student or teacher, we invite you to explore the site. It includes case studies on how to address hateful speech; a legal roadmap for public and private universities to adhere to the First Amendment and uphold precepts of academic freedom; a resource library stocked with advice, sample policies, and sample statements; and pages specifically designed to answer the questions of administrators, faculty, and students.

I hope you have a chance to review the guide, and I welcome any thoughts or feedback you may have. In addition, we hope you will share the Guide with your colleagues, peers, and networks so that it can reach those who need it most.

Thank you, and all the best,
