Friend,

We’ve seen a dramatic increase in the number of domestic violence cases since the start of the coronavirus crisis, resulting from its isolation, job loss, and anxiety. As we remember the many who have suffered from this pandemic, we cannot forget those suffering at the hands of their abusers.

And even as we stem the spread of the virus and begin to get back to normal, domestic violence will continue to pose a threat to many in our community.

Last month, the US House of Representatives voted to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act, a critical resource to address gender-based violence. Reauthorization of the Act would provide needed funds to investigate and prosecute violent crimes against women and prevent abusive partners from accessing firearms.

Since the Violence Against Women Act lapsed in 2019, the US Senate Republicans have refused to take up the bill. Join me in calling on our US senators to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act.

As Attorney General, my top priority is protecting the people of North Carolina -- and reauthorizing this bill is an important step.

With gratitude,

Josh Stein
