I’ve been leading the charge to lift the SALT deduction cap and put an end to the financial burden it places on New Jersey families ever since my first day in Congress.
The cap was introduced in Donald Trump’s disastrous 2017 tax bill as a politically motivated way to punish blue states and prevent them from investing in their communities. Ever since, it’s taken an economic toll on middle-class families in states like New Jersey and on our state and local governments.
By lifting the cap and restoring the full SALT deduction, we can put money back into New Jerseyans’ pockets and reinvigorate our local economies -- which is especially crucial as we make our way out of the pandemic.

Over 41% of New Jerseyans used the SALT deduction prior to the cap.
SALT gave families money they could use in case of emergencies like medical expenses and car repairs or to fund their child’s education. It also strengthens state and local investments for protecting public health, supporting first-responder services, lifting up low-income families, and ensuring our public education system has the resources it needs.
With new leadership in the White House, I’m confident we can get this done for New Jersey families, but we need a swell of grassroots support to help make it a reality.
