On May 25, 2020, we all watched in horror as a Minneapolis police officer murdered George Floyd on camera. Derek Chauvin knelt on George Floyd's neck for 9 minutes and 23 seconds while Floyd pleaded for his life.
That day sparked a summer of nationwide protests demanding justice for Black lives. We demanded change to our justice system and swore to never let police violence take another innocent life.
And then it happened again.
Less than 15 miles from where George Floyd was murdered in 2020, a police officer shot and killed 20-year-old Daunte Wright after pulling him over for a traffic violation, claiming he had an active warrant.
These tragedies aren't anomalies, we wish they were. Over the span of their life, about 1 in every 1,000 Black men can expect to be killed by police.
A counterfeit bill should not be a death sentence. A traffic violation should not be a death sentence. A warrant should not be a death sentence. And being Black should not be a death sentence -- but it still can be in America today.
House Democrats have already passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act twice to reform our criminal justice system and police force. Now, Democrats and Republicans MUST act to pass it in the Senate.
