Indivisibles,
A few weeks ago, the New Yorker published a scary article about how the
Kochs and other right wing mega-donors are pushing a shady,
McConnell-backed campaign to stop the For the People Act. Here’s the
headline:
[ [link removed] ]Screenshot of a New Yorker headline and lede. Headline reads: "Inside
the Koch-backed effort to block the largest election-reform bill in half a
century." Lede reads: "On a leaked conference call, leaders of dark-money
groups and an aide to Mitch McConnell expressed frustration with the
popularity of the legislation--even among Republican voters."
It’s a long article (if you have a while, read it [ [link removed] ]here) but here’s the
gist: the For the People Act, like D.C. statehood, is just common sense,
and it’s popular even with Republican voters.
Now you’d think Republican voters liking it would prompt right wing
leaders to support the bill, right? Wrong. They don’t really listen to the
will of the people, so instead they’re doubling down, planning to use what
they call an “under-the-dome” strategy to block the bill. Translation:
they’re going to use the filibuster to kill common-sense,
democracy-strengthening bills that even their own voters support!
The Kochs may have near-bottomless pockets, but we’ve got something they
don’t: people power. (Also, we’re right. And they’re not.)
We don’t have to match them dollar-for-dollar, but we do need to raise
enough to keep our tools going so we can support this grassroots movement.

So what are the Kochs so upset about? Well, here’s a quick look at what
the For the People Act does:
* Empowers voters and ensures everyone is included and represented with
same-day registration, expanded early voting, preventing
gerrymandering, and more.
* Gets money out of politics by encouraging small-dollar donations,
requiring additional transparency and curtailing the power of super
PACs.
* Cracks down on corruption by making sure ethics rules reply to
everyone, including the president, and requiring much more
transparency about conflicts of interest.
* Supports the Post Office by increasing support for USPS, prohibiting
the removal of mail collection boxes and mail processing machines, and
prohibiting USPS from making major operational changes that would
affect the delivery of voting materials or election mail.
These aren’t controversial things -- they’re rational, simple changes that
will strengthen our democracy. The only reason to be afraid of them is if
you’re afraid of regular people being represented in government -- which
the Kochs and McConnell are. They admitted they can’t win this debate on
the merits, so instead they’re going to twist the rules of the Senate to
block progress, just like their predecessors did to block the Civil Rights
Act and prop up Jim Crow.
You’ve already seen what our plans to fight back look like: newspaper and
radio ads in crucial states, highly-targeted digital persuasion campaigns,
on-the-ground and online organizing, direct mail, and most important of
all, providing resources to empower thousands of groups and hundreds of
thousands of activists nationwide to pressure their elected officials to
abolish the filibuster and pass democracy reform.
But all of that costs money -- we’ve budgeted over $700,000 on our For the
People Project alone. And since we’re not billionaires with bottomless
wallets, we need your support: can you chip in $5 or $10? If everybody
reading this email did that, we’d have all we need to beat the Kochs.

Sometimes it feels daunting to stand up to the right wing’s seemingly
endless money and power. But we always find comfort, strength and that
last little bit of determination in remembering that while they may have
the endless wallets on their side, we have the people on ours.
In solidarity,
Indivisible Team
