John,
Here’s how we know that the TRUST Act is total garbage: It uses the deficit created by programs without independent trust funds as an excuse to cut programs that do.
The military doesn’t have a trust fund, so we can spend nearly $700 billion annually without taking in dedicated revenue―but because Social Security and Medicare are directly financed by payroll contributions, Sen. Romney has his knives out for them.
Democrats have spent too long playing along with Republican deficit fearmongering. Social Security Works is making sure that every member of Congress knows that a vote for the TRUST Act is a vote to cut Social Security and Medicare!
Michael shared more about why there are fewer Democrats playing along with Mitt’s game this year―if you missed that email, check it out below.
Thanks,
Alex Lawson Social Security Works

--MICHAEL'S EMAIL--
John,
This week, we raised the alarm that Mitt Romney re-introduced his Social Security-threatening bill, the TRUST Act. But the worst part is, he didn’t do it alone.
Some Democrats, including Sens. Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema, joined Mitt as original co-sponsors. But because of our work, there are far fewer Democrats supporting this bill than there were in last year’s version.
Social Security Works led a campaign to educate Democrats about the dangers of this harmless-sounding legislation last year, and we’re going to keep it up to ensure that our Social Security system is never cut! Chip in $7 today!
In 2020, we met with almost every Democrat who sponsored the TRUST Act to explain just why it’s so dangerous. While Mitt Romney claims that it is about responsibility and solvency, the truth is that the TRUST Act creates an automatic vehicle for fast-tracked, closed-door cuts.
Politicians aren’t going to emerge from a closed-door process with a popular plan to make millionaires and billionaires pay their fair share―they’re going to say they’ve made the “hard choice” to cut benefits. We know that because Sen. Romney, their ringleader, ran for President on a platform of Social Security and Medicare cuts paired with tax cuts for the rich!
We stopped the TRUST Act last year. We’re going to do it again, and we’re going to make sure that every Democrat knows that a vote for the TRUST Act is a vote to cut Social Security and Medicare!
Thanks,
Michael Phelan Social Security Works
