This week was Black Maternal Health Week. I have shared my experience with medical bias; after giving birth to my babies, the doctors didn’t believe my pain, and it nearly cost me my life. This week, we also saw more evidence of systemic racism in the headlines -- more videos surfacing of violence at the hands of police, more Black and Brown lives stolen.
All I could and can think about was how, one day, I will need to have a talk with my two young boys and explain to them what it means to grow up Black in America.
I wanted to share a letter I wrote to my boys. I’d also love to start a conversation on social media and hear your thoughts if you are willing. You can read it and engage here.
On behalf of communities impacted by racial injustice and those we have lost, I will continue to advocate for change and use any platform I have to make our world safer and more just. This includes the governorship if I’m privileged enough to win.
Thank you, as always, from me and my campaign. I hope my candidacy will lead to victory, not just so kids can see a new kind of face and leader in the governor’s mansion, but so there’s a true champion for racial justice with the plans and dedication to make a change. Your contributions, volunteer shifts, engagements on social media, and conversations with your friends and family about our campaign are making an impact. We’re heading into early voting next week with momentum and I’m honored to have you by my side in this fight.
Please take a moment to read, share, and engage with my letter. I really would love to hear your thoughts.
Thanks,
Jennifer
Jennifer Carroll Foy was born and raised in Petersburg. In 2017, she flipped a Republican district as a first-time candidate pregnant with twins. During her time as Delegate, Jennifer championed the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment, helped expand Medicaid to 400,000 Virginians, and advocated for the Commonwealth’s most vulnerable communities.
She has a career of public service and it started long before 2017. As a public defender, Jennifer helped give a voice to the often voiceless — children, people suffering from addiction, those experiencing homelessness, those with mental illness, and the poor.
Now she’s running to be the first woman elected Governor of Virginia and serve as the first Black woman to be governor nationwide.
